Bacevich says everything I mean to say and want to say with greater verve and clarity. This post is right on the money.

Professor Bacevich explains the current situation in a clear-cut and incisive manner.

Andrew Bacevich's work over the last decade has laid the persuasively-reasoned, meticulously-researched and brilliantly- articulated foundations for the very shift in consciousness that he is now (finally) observing. Thank you! Also indispensable is the work of Chalmers Johnson, Noam Chomsky, and the rest of the valiant and persistent contributors to the American Empire Project. The current national conversation now reversing militarism is based upon the work of those published by this foundation. God bless these deeply-patriotic, visionary leaders, as well as our courageous President and many public servants who are standing up to war interests; the brave soldiers whose lives they are saving; the many Americans who may benefit from the opportunities we're now less likely to waste on adversarial relations; and the children scattered across the globe, who hopefully will be better able to lead healthy, productive lives in co-existence with a less- aggressive America.

As much as I would enjoy believing in Mr.Bacevich's observations, to continue the metaphor, it is common for a spiked temperature to receed, only to spike again. Which I happen to believe will be the case, given the vulnerability the U.S feels now, (with it's "exhausted" military and depressingly incompetent body congress). All it will take is ONE small (planned?),international event that is presented to the American sheeple as "response worthy" and we will once again be thrust, as a nation, into the foggy, endless mindset of self-righteous crusaders.

I believe this because not only is the mindset still inplace, but the machine to defend it is as well. We......the people....are NOT in control of our own government. And have not been so since the end of the Eisenhower era. IMO.

But thank you, Mr. Bacevich, for your attempt at a bit of blue sky betweens the clouds of the depressingly deadly and spirit killing delirium we have wallowed in for the past 10+ years.
