I gladly read anything coming from Andrew Bacevich. Leave it to a former military man from whose eyes the scales have fallen to pull the covers off the tawdry cynicism underlying these engineered displays of faux patriotism.

Excellent. Jingoism at its worst. I'm starting to see that film made by Lefi Reifenstall with all the red white and black swastika flags waving while young people hold them high and thousands cheer in the stands in my minds eye.

Nothing changes - give the masses bread and circuses so they'll forget the desperate situation they are all in.

Another overview "view": the staged event you just described only further illustrates the depth to which the distorted concepts of patriotism, loyalty, support.....and it adjuct avoidance of any real danger....have sunk.

It is almost as if the whole world is lost in some dillusional dream of reality. Together we foster and support the surreal reality that it is O.K., patriotic in fact, to support a military budget at it's current obscene level, sustain "wars" that argueably
have no real moral or practical grounding, and close our eyes to the real fact that the infrastructure, educational, and various other critical social syatems are not only broken but frighteningly so. All at the expense of our blind support of these patriarchal, antiquated, and corrupt institutions that are bleeding this republic dry of not only it wealth, but hope and spirit.

I have written this before in the ultimate response to your articles that appear here......."it" is too sick to fix. "It" needs to be torn down, folks jailed where due,and a fresh new start put in place. How that is done with out being arrested for sedition or terrorism or "a threat to the State" is beyond me.

I (WE) feel better, when you give me that old time religion - a game - a metaphor to allow me to think for just an hour or two or for ever - that war is just a game and if you make the right moves and believe in your team and spirit yourselves up you can win, will win, the game that is life and death and all the mess in between and not a little round ball and some numbers on a score board...

This is so well written and on the mark. The powers that be in this military/industrial structure that now has supplanted democracy in our country are indeed smooth and effective with their propaganda.

Thank you for verbally cutting through the thick mask of "respectability" that is placed over the face of guttural greed and prideful "omnipotence."

America doesn't need a Ministry of Truth or a Gestapo to enforce order. Even propaganda has been privatized. The brainwashing is so complete and the society is so obedient as spectacles like this attest to.

Have you seen the miller beer commercial where the beer delivery man sits in the stands with a group of military persons and extols their virtues.
This commercial is done in the Milwaukee brewers stadium In my mind they are glorifying war.
