Good, important, and timely article. Could benefit from more use of the real names and less of the headgear color of organizations that are elements of the SOC; i.e., when discussing the Special Forces, use the correct term of (Upper Case) Special Forces, rather than the John Wayne-ism Green Berets. Special forces (lower case) refers to nothing. Special Operations Forces refers to the entirety of Special Forces, Psyops, Civil Affairs, Rangers, SEALS, Air Commandos, and Marine Force Recon which comprise the SOC. Attention to the details adds up to increased credibility of the larger analyses. Otherwise, it can be dismissed as amateurism. Nick Turse has been around long enough to know better.

Interesting that some 40 years ago the number of clandestine/covert teams involved in operations just in Special Forces (SF) was 134 worldwide. So, the more things seem to change, the more they remain the same. The difference is that 40 years ago a Nick Turse would not have been able to discover that.
